J. Rhodes Haverty Lecture: Ethics at the Intersection of Health Care and Biomedical

Ruth Faden, director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, speaks at the 12th annual J. Rhodes Haverty Lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 30 at the Rialto Center for the Arts. Faden will discuss “Henrietta Lacks: Ethics at the Intersection of Health Care and Biomedical Science.” Lack’s cervical cancer cells have been used in more than 70,000 medical studies – without consent or compensation. She died in 1951 of an aggressive form of cervical cancer but her cells, named HeLa cells, continue to live on more than 63 years after her death, leading to the development of many vaccines and live saving procedures.
