The Georgia College Press Association (GCPA) announced its finalists in the Better Newspapers Contest and The Signal has 19 nominations in 16 categories.
The contest includes student newspapers from the state of Georgia with the winners chosen in February. The Signal received nominations for overall categories in General Excellence, Sports Coverage,Layout and Design, and General Advertising.
“The last sports editor, Akiem Bailum, worked more hard in journalism than I’ve ever saw in my life,” said Sports Editor Rashad Milligan. “His advice to me was to attend as many games and events as I could.”
The Signal is also up for awards in individual categories:

- Entertainment Story (2): Morayo Oyewolo, Nicole Motahari
- Entertainment Feature: Sydney Cunningham
- Column: Nichole Place

- Sports Photograph: Jade Johnson
- Review: Fernando Mattos
- Feature Story: Charles Bailey
- Editorial or Editorial Series: John Miller
“I am honored to be nominated for an award from the Georgia College Press Association,” said The Signal’s News Editor Lauren Booker. “ I learned a lot as I worked on my investigative articles.”
Last year, The Signal placed 2nd in the general categories of Sports, News, Features and General Photography. Former Photography Editor Candra Umunna won 1st place in Best Editorial and Ruth Pannill in Best Photograph. The Signal took home General Excellence for the third consecutive year in 2014.
The entire staff worked hard and is very proud that their work is being recognized.
