The Georgia State Women’s soccer team suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Troy on Friday night in Alabama. A lack of clinical finishing in front of goal and a defensive scramble downed the Panthers.
The first half was a rather drab affair. In the 23rd minute, Georgia State forward Whitney Ravan had a sight on the goal but her effort went wide to the left. Panthers goalkeeper Brie Haynes was called into action in the 25th minute to make her first save of the match.
At half time, the Panthers trailed the Trojans in shots (4-3), with both goalkeepers making one save.
The Trojans came out strong in the first half, and found the back of the net in the 61st minute after a scramble in the box.
Trojan’s player Alissa Jones took a strong shot that Haynes saved, the rebound again fell to Jones, but Haynes was there to make the double save.
Unfortunately, the ball was not cleared and after deflecting off several players, a Trojans player latched onto the loose ball and fired into the bottom-right corner to make the score 1-0.
The Panthers roared into action after the goal pressing for an equalizer, but despite creating five chances in 15 minutes, were unable to find a goal. Out of the five shots the Panthers created, four went wide, and the game ended at 1-0.
The Women’s Soccer team next match is on Oct. 19 against Sun Belt leaders South Alabama.
