The Georgia State women’s soccer team played their first home game of the season, and were downed 2-1 by Samford.
The Samford Bulldogs started the contest brightly, with Panthers goalkeeper Brie Haynes making two saves to keep the game scoreless. Samford’s pressure finally paid off in the 14th minute, when forward Heather Lacy powered a header past Haynes.
Georgia State dragged themselves back into the game in the 24th minute with a goal from Whitney Ravan. She capitalized on a poor clearance from the Bulldogs goalkeeper to find the back of the net.
The Bulldogs responded quickly with Lacy grabbing her second goal of the night, from a set piece. A dangerous free kick was deflected into the path of a Samford player who squared for Lacy to find the back of the net.
The Panthers went into break down 2-1. The second half saw both teams carve out decent chances, but poor finishing from both sides saw the game end with a Panthers loss.
This loss takes Georgia State to an 0-3-1 record. In spite of the winless start, Head Coach Derek Leader complimented the team, saying that they played better than in Friday’s match with Murray State and to look on the bright side given where the Bulldogs are.
The team will continue to seek its first win of the season at Tennessee Tech, on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m.
