Georgia State women’s soccer extended a run of four consecutive shutouts to defeat in-state rival Mercer 1-0. A goal from forward Ashley Nagy and an outstanding game from goalkeeper Brie Haynes secured the win.
The first half started with the Bears on the front foot, outshooting Georgia State 8-4. Haynes made two great saves early on, including a one-on-one with Bears forward Washida Blackman.
The Panthers responded with Nagy seeing a shot saved by the Bears goalkeeper. Panthers forward Whitney Ravan beat the goalkeeper but saw her shot hit the right post, and Panther midfielder Lindsay Leonardo sent her effort from the rebound wide. The half ended at 0-0.
Mercer began the second half in control of the game, taking three shots, none on target. A quick counterattack from Georgia State in the 57th minute changed the game though, with defender Amanda Bruemmer making a surging run from deep before laying the ball off to forward Callie O’Connor. She sent a ball over the defense to Nagy who took one touch and calmly curved the ball into the back of the net.
Mercer’s chance to equalize came in the 78th minute after a Mercer corner kick fell to Blackman. Haynes made an incredible point blank save to keep the lead, and the Panthers managed the game for the last 12 minutes to grab the win.
The Panthers next home game is Sunday at Panthersville.
