Georgia State women’s basketball improved their Sun Belt record to 2-1 and their overall record to 7-5 with a 74-69 victory over the Texas State Bobcats on Monday at the Sports Arena.
First Half
The game began with a three-minute stretch in which both teams went scoreless. With nearly four minutes elapsed, Bobcats junior guard Erin Peoples scored the first three points of the game with a layup and a made free throw after being fouled by Makeba Ponder.
The Panthers responded with two-point jumpers from Kennesha Nichols and Gaby Moss taking off a 4-3 lead before Peoples increased her point total to five and the game’s score to 5-4 in favor of Texas State.
The Bobcats, would maintain their one-point advantage as they took a 7-6 lead. Georgia State went ahead by a score of 12-7 after a pair of three-pointers by Ashlee Cole. Alisha Andrews drained a three to up the Panthers’ advantage to 15-7.
Georgia State’s run became 11-0 after Nichols’ fourth point of the game with Georgia State going ahead 17-7 before Texas State junior guard Raven Burns made three-pointer. This brought the Bobcats within 17-10.
Texas State, after a media timeout, responded with an 8-2 run. Junior guard Ayriel Anderson contributed a layup and a made free throw after being fouled by Ashley Watson.
After Georgia State scoreda two-point jumper by Ponder, Bobcats’ redshirt senior forward Jacqueline Jeffcoat placed in a three-point shot, which was followed by a two-pointer by senior guard Meghan Brauer bringing Texas State within one at 19-18.
Brittany Logan made a pair of free throws after being fouled by Jeffcoat. The Panthers’ lead became 23-18 after Kayla Nolan’s first pair of points of the game.
With the score at 25-20 in favor of Georgia State, Nolan upped her point total to four, allowing the Panthers’ lead to expand to seven. Peoples made two free throws after being fouled by Ashanti Groover cutting the Texas State deficit to five at 27-22. Moss then increased her point total to six as the Panthers’ lead went back to six at 29-22.
The Bobcats would cut their deficit to 29-25 going into halftime with Burns making one of two free throws after a foul was assessed against Moss. Freshman forward Ti’Aira Pitts contributed a jump shot with six seconds left in the half bringing about a 29-25 score.
Second Half
Watson gave Georgia State a 31-25 lead in the second half with her first two points. Nolan then made one of two from the line after being fouled by Peoples bringing the tally 32-25.
The Panthers maintained their seven-point lead as the score became 34-27. A three from Anderson was followed by two-pointers by Nolan and Nichols as Georgia State pulled ahead 38-30. This prompted a Bobcats timeout.
With the score at 40-32 in Georgia State’s favor, Pitts made one of two from the free throw line after being fouled by Logan. Nichols then achieved her seventh and eighth points of the game for a nine-point, 42-33 Panthers’ lead.
Georgia State then led 44-35. Anderson’s second three of the game resulted in Texas State within six at 44-38, before Haley Gerrin got on the scoreboard with a layup making the score 46-38.
The Panthers maintained their eight-point advantage with the score 48-40 before a media timeout. With just over ten minutes remaining, Cole’s third three of the game upped Georgia State’s lead 51-40.
Peoples placed in a layup increasing her point total to 13, before Cole made one of two free throws after freshman guard Ericka May fouled her bringing the Panthers’ lead 52-44.
Georgia State maintained their 10-point advantage at 54-44. Texas State redshirt junior center fouled Logan placingher at the line. She made both free throws as the Georgia State lead increased to 12 at 56-44.
The Bobcats then cut into this deficit with a three from Burns. Bobcats freshman guard Taeler Deer followed Burns with a three of her own as the gap became six at 56-50.
Moss only made one of two from the line after being fouled by Deer, but two points each from Peoples and Jeffcoat equaled a 10-1 Texas State run and a 57-54 score in Georgia State’s favor.
A layup from Nolan and a successful free throw from Logan after being fouled by Jeffcoat extended the Georgia State lead back to six at 60-54.
The Bobcats’ Peoples and the Panthers’ Nolan t each made a pair of free throws bringing the score 62-56 in Georgia State’s favor. Watson then increased her point total to six expanding the Panthers’ lead to eight, but Anderson’s third three-pointer with Texas State within five again at 64-59.
Layups by Cole and Nichols then expanded the Panthers’ lead to 68-59. A layup from Braeuer was followed by Andrews making one of two free throws, after being fouled by Braeuer. This made the score 69-61 in the Panthers’ favor.
Georgia State maintained this eight-point lead at 71-63. After a foul charged to Deer, Andrews made two more from the line increasing the Panthers’ lead to 73-63.
With the Panthers ahead by a score of 74-64, Texas State went on a 5-0 run with an Anderson layup and a Braeuer three bringing the score 74-69. This prompted a Bobcats timeout with four seconds left. Four seconds later, Georgia State had sealed their second conference win this year.
Georgia State’s next game will be on Thursday as they travel to face Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m.
