Georgia State women’s basketball’s lost to the Texas State Bobcats by a final of 71-61. The loss drops Georgia State to 10-13 on the season and 5-9 in Sun Belt play.
First Half
Texas State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with all seven points coming from junior guard Erin Peoples. Georgia State would get on the scoreboard with a layup by Kennesha Nichols off an assist by Andrews.
Peoples upped her early point total to nine giving Texas State a 9-2 lead. Andrews’ first three of the game got the Panthers within four at 9-5. This would be followed up by a three from freshman Bobcats guard Ericka May increasing the Texas State lead to 12-5.
With the score at 14-7 in the Bobcats’ favor, the first three pointer of the game for Makeba Ponder cut the Georgia State deficit to 14-10 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Ponder drew a foul against Deer after converting on a layup increasing her point total to five. A made free throw drew Georgia State closer with the score at 17-15 in Texas State’s favor.
What ensued was a 9-0 run which included three each for Deer, Peoples and junior guard Raven Burns as the Bobcats pulled ahead by 11 at 26-15. The Panthers got within single-digits again as the first two points for Ashlee Cole made it a 26-17 game.
Texas State maintained its nine-point lead with scores of 29-20, 31-22, and 33-24. Georgia State tied the game with a 9-0 run that included five points from Gaby Moss along with two each from Nichols and Ashley Watson to tie it up at 33.
The Panthers and Bobcats would remain tied as the tally became 35-35 before redshirt senior forward Jacqueline Jeffcoat made a two-point jump shot with 27 seconds remaining to give Texas State a 37-35 advantage going into halftime.
Second Half
Junior guard Ayriel Anderson got the second half started with a three extending the Bobcats’ lead to 40-35. After a layup by Nichols increasing her point output to six, layups from Peoples and May made it a 44-37 game.
With the score at 48-39 with over fifteen minutes left, three-pointers by Ponder and Morgan Jackson got the Panthers within three at 48-45. Another three by Anderson made it a 51-45 game.
The next three minutes of the second half would remain scoreless before two more threes from Burns made it a 57-45 game.
With the score at 59-47, two more points each by Logan and Moss got Georgia State within eight at 59-51 with just under six minutes to play.
Anderson’s third three along with Peoples upping her point output to 22 extended the Bobcats’ lead to 64-51.
The Bobcats would later maintain their eight-point lead at 66-58. Miranda Smith was charged with a foul against Erin Peoples, who made two free throws making it a 68-58 game.
Eight seconds later, a jump shot from Andrews got Georgia State within eight at 68-60 before Anderson’s fourth three pointer made it a 71-60 game with Texas State leading. With 26 seconds left in the game, Ponder made one of two from the line after a foul by Braeuer. Texas State would win by a final score of 71-61.
Georgia State is scheduled to return to the hardwood on Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. against South Alabama at the Sports Arena.
