Approximately 30 people attended the Nepali Earthquake vigil at Woodruff Park to rally for support and donations for the victims on Thursday.
The Nepali earthquake shook the northern part of Nepal killing more than thousands of residents on Apr. 25, according to BBC.
Students who attended the vigil were from different schools around Atlanta, such as Georgia Tech, Emory, Kennesaw State University and Georgia State.
Sudesra Baral, a Georgia State sophomore and vice president of mass communications for the Georgia State Nepali Student Association, said two of her aunts in Nepal were affected by the earthquake, and one endured a foot injury due to the earthquake’s effects.
Because of the earthquake’s power, Nepali residents have resided in tents in the streets, according to Baral. She also remarked on how much attention Nepal has gotten since the earthquake occurred.
Baral said the Nepali Student Association has already received more than $200 through credit card payments on Facebook that will provide relief to those suffering from the earthquake in Nepal.
“It’s great to see everyone come together and help out,” Baral said.
Rakshya Gorkhali, a Georgia State Ph.D. student, said she participated in the vigil because Nepal is her home country. She said that because it’s her and other’s home country, they all want to help however they can.
Georgia State senior biology major Karuna Shah said she has family and relatives in Nepal. She also said since she and others are not in Nepal, they have taken to fundraising as a way to help their home country and spread the word.
