Yesterday’s Art Fair brought hundreds of students and the public out to discover new clubs and programs for photography, design, music and various other visual arts.
Free food was available and a live band performed at the Rialto. As vendors lined Gilmer Street, a small jazz band played outside the art and design building.
Art Student Union President Candice Greathouse, along with club members, had an abundance of literature on display for students to learn more about what the club has to offer.
“Our student union is like an umbrella for the 11 student groups in the [Ernest G. Welch] Arts and Design building. Generally, the Arts Fair has been mostly just the student organizations from art and design, [but] this year it’s expanded. So now we’re about a fourth of the 50 groups.”
Colby Gardner, Georgia State political science major, said she attended the Arts Fair to experience more things. She wanted to expand her variety of knowledge and diversity. Because Gardner is from a suburban area of Atlanta, she said she enjoys coming downtown for the diversity.
“I want to start a photography blog,” Gardner said. The visual arts is what interested her in the fair, she said. She’s also looking into religious studies.
“They’re offering different religious classes that you can take, internships- even study abroad,” she said.
Greathouse said because the business school and the art and design school aren’t able to interact as much, the club’s goal is to open communication.
“We’re just trying to heighten awareness about our programs and the arts at GSU and that they’re open to everyone,” Greathouse said. “…make the school more interdisciplinary or at least more of a community.”
