Georgia State softball lost the second matchup of its in-state road trip as the Panthers lost to the Georgia Southern Eagles 5-2 Wednesday night.
Georgia Southern was hot right from the start, as designated player Taylor Rogers got on base with a leadoff single.
After stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice fly, third baseman Shelby Morrill singled to score Rogers and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
A double from shortstop Kourtny Thomas plated Morrill and gave Georgia Southern a 2-0 advantage. That became 3-0 when first baseman Morgan Robinson singled to drive in Thomas.
In the top of the second, Callie Alford led off the frame for the Panthers with a single. Kensey Caldwell also singled to advance Alford to second before a pop fly from Megan Litumbe put runners at second and third.
Alford scored on a wild pitch to cut the Georgia State deficit to 3-1. A single from MeQuilla Franklin scored Caldwell to make the game 3-2.
The Eagles would get two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Kaitlyn Johnson hit a two RBI-double to extend the Georgia Southern lead 5-2 and shut out the Panthers for the rest of the game.
The loss brings State back under .500 at 20-21 while Southern’s record improved to 28-11.
Sarah Purvis was awarded her 16 victory for the Eagles while Eron Milton was credited with her loss for the Panthers.
Georgia State will return to the Heck Softball Complex this weekend for a three-game series with conference rival Texas State.
