Slip into Ceramics

The Student League of Independent Potters and Sculptors (SLIPS) are selling ceramics in the University Plaza this week to raise money for upcoming events and demonstrations for the organization.

Ceramics will be on display for purchase in the Plaza from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 4 and March 5. The prices of the items sold range from five to $160.ceramics

SLIPS is a part of the ceramics department of Georgia State University. Their goal is to provide the students of Georgia State a strong foundation by practicing ceramics and fundraising events to foster technical mastery of the material.

The profits made from the ceramics will be used to help fundraise their biggest conference NCECA, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Annual Conference, held on March 19.

Members of the organization will represent Georgia State University in the national student jury exhibition where many different schools will be viewing the ceramics.

Some of the profits made from the ceramic products will also bring in business artists from around the country to do demonstrations for Georgia State in the future.

“You can create anything you want from ceramics,” said Ashley Maxwell, a graduate student and ceramics major. “The items will last a lifetime. The pottery may break but the pieces will always remain.”

Upcoming SLIPS events include the St. Petersburg Gallery Exhibition March 9, the NCECA on March 19 and The Pride Show in New York City in June.

To become a member of SLIPS students can contact the members via Facebook at www.facebook.com/gsuceramics or attend a meeting, which is every Thursday at 2 p.m. in room 158 in the Arts and Humanities building.
