SGA 1/16 meeting: New Executive VP sworn in; new bill allows easier entry into SGA for freshman

The meeting began with statements from President Andrew Whyte, VP for Budget & Finance Tyler Lewis, and VP for Student Services Lanier Henson. Each of the three executive members outlined what was to be accomplished at the meeting.

After the executives made their statements, Senators had the opportunity to hold the floor and propose any bill that they wanted to see passed during that meeting. The first Senator to hold the floor was Justin Brighthorp.

He proposed a bill that would create, in essence, a fast-track for incoming freshman eager to join the SGA an opportunity to gain experience without giving them too much responsibility.

“We have twelve vacancies in the upcoming fall semester in the Senate Standing Committees,” said Brighthorp. “I propose that we allow freshman to apply for these positions, as they will be overseen by the President Pro-Tempore in the Senate.”

After much deliberation the bill was enacted into law by majority vote from Senate members. After roughly an hour, all senators interested in proposing a bill had a chance to hold the floor, and the focus of the meeting shifted to the offical swearing in of the new Executive VP, Ashley Uzamere.

“8 candidates applied for this position,” said President Whyte. “After several rounds of interviews, Ashley seperated herself from the other candidates, and I made the decision to appoint her as Executive Vice President.”

After the new Executive Vice President was sworn in, President Whyte debriefed the members of the senate and the meeting concluded.

It lasted roughly one hour and thirty minutes.
