Satto Thai and Sushi Bar is vaguely familiar

Expectations are high for Marietta Street’s latest offering, Satto Thai and Sushi Bar. Spoon, the Thai restaurant that previously occupied Satto’s location at 768 Marietta Street, will be a hard act to follow.

Even from the outside Satto echoes spoon. Much of the décor and the seating have the same feel.

There are two very start differences that are instantly apparent. The traditional bar that was full of sake and spirits was replaced with a friendly sushi chef bearing gifts of fresh, raw fish. Sushi may not be an equal trade off for a drink with dinner, but it is close.

Luckily, Satto kept some of the friendly spoon staff around during the transition. Another highlight is the expansion of the menu. It seemed like they absorbed Spoon’s menu and then some. The Sushi rolls almost double the size of the menu. It all appeared to be highly ambitious.

The friendly sushi chef ’s selection of sashimi was tender and very beautiful. Sometimes salmon sashimi can be a bit slimy and have a strange texture, but theirs was very nice. For the price it was a good variety.

The varieties of rolls were nice and competitively priced. You may not find god when you eat their sushi, but you can go on a date and get a variety of food without breaking the bank.

It may be a convenient place to get good sushi but I will come back for the Thai offerings.

The Massaman curry had the sweetness of the sweetness of the cardamom and tamarind with a really nice balance of heat from the chili.

I chose to have mine served with tofu, which is usually a gamble. Satto’s tofu had a nice texture that made it a highlight to the dish instead of a meat alternative. My only complaint was that the carrots were a bit mushy for my liking and they could have been firmer.

It may take a couple of trips to Satto to try their expanded menu and really gauge how they will grow into their offerings. Satto come highly recommended to a group or couple that want to grab some sushi or a bowl of curry before a night out, (although the lack of a drink menu for now might be a deal breaker for some).

Satto’s first couple of weeks open have not been bad…but it feels like a reincarnation of Spoon with the addition of sushi.
