Georgia State hits the sand despite cold weather
This weekend, Georgia State sand volleyball participated in its first Fall scrimmage prior to the regular season beginning next semester.
The Panthers were one of five teams that were part of the Collegiate Sand Clash that was presented by Rally Volleyball. The other schools that participated were Florida State, UAB, LSU, and South Carolina at the event in Emerson, Ga.
Georgia State went 35˗28 while Florida State posted a top standing, prevailing in 82 percent of their matches.
Out of the 64 matches that took place, the Panthers were in 33 of them.
The pair of Sara Olivova and Natalie Wilson split two sets against LSU’s Mandi Orellana and Lily Kessler, 21˗16, and 18˗21. They would drop a pair of set against South Carolina’s Anne Montgomery and Melanie Pavels 21˗10, 21˗15.
Olivova and Wilson would defeat South Carolina’s Megan Kent and Macie Tendrich 21˗19 and 21˗13 but bested by Florida State’s July Brown and Tory Paranagua, 21˗13, 21˗19.
Nina Interwies and Milani Pickering split against Chynna Ratner and Maddie Frome of USC, 21˗19 and 18˗21. They would defeat Rachel Fairbanks and Ally Slaughter 21˗14, 21˗16 before falling to Montgomery and Pavels 21˗15, 21˗14. Interwies and Pickering also notched victories over LSU’s Victoria Boraski and Carly Morris, 21˗13, 21˗11.
Maggie Dostalova and Jansen Button split against Kent and Tendrich, 21˗14, 19˗21, but defeated the Gamecocks’ Julia Mannisto and Paige Wheeler, 21˗11, 21˗15. Dostalova and Button would split vs. the Seminoles’ Stephanie Pellitteri and Taylor Nyquist, 17˗21, 21˗15. Florida State’s Nina Pellitteri and Jace Pardon would defeat the Panthers pair of Dostalova and Button, 21˗15, 21˗8.
The event for Katelyn Rawls and Sarah Agnew commenced with a split over July Brown and Tory Paranagua, 21˗15, 16˗21 before Pardon and Pellitteri bested them 21˗10, 21˗11.
Rawls and Agnew would earn splits over Mannisto and Wheeler (16˗21, 21˗18) and Pellitteri and Nyquist (23˗25, 21˗18).
Delaney Rohan and Alexis Townsend would have a great day. They defeated UAB’s Rachel Fairbanks and Ally Slaughter, 21˗18 and 21˗19. They split with Callan Molle and Riley Young of LSU, 21˗15, 12˗21. They defeated Erin Neuenfeldt and Jade Vitt from South Carolina 21˗17, 21˗10 in addition to a split Vanessa Friere and Sierra Sanchez of Florida State, 12˗21.
Georgia State’s Alexis Emurr and Jessica Fourspring also took part. Molle and Young defeated them in a pair of sets, 21˗14, 21˗19 before topping Florida State’s Katherine Plessy and Meghan Conway, 21˗18, 21˗18.
In between, Emurr and Fourspring fell to Florida State’s Julia Thompson and Blyss Harkness, 21˗14, 21˗17.
Allie Elson and Molly Smestad also put in a big outing. They were victorious in both of their sets over the Gamecocks’ Carolina Goerke and Haley Guyton, 21˗17, 21˗13. Elson and Smestad also bested another South Carolina pair with 21˗10 and 21˗9 victories over Helen Recaborde and Katie McCormick. They also were victorious over the same pair later, 21˗16, 21˗14.
Thompson and Harkness would defeat Elson and Smestad, 21˗17, 21˗13.
The Panthers’ Karlee Kavanaugh and Jesse Swaney would open up with a split over the Gamecocks’ Morgan Lavigne and Shiloh Burgeen, 18˗21 and 21˗19. They split Colleen Nosovitch and Zuzia Reszka, 18˗21, 21˗10. Kavanaugh and Swaney defeated Recaborde and McCormick, 21˗17, 21˗18. They were credited with 21˗7 and 21˗15 wins over Thompson and Harkness.
