Next week, as a part of Korea Week at Georgia State, the Southeast Korean Dance Association and the drum team from the Center for Pan-American Community Services (CPACS) will be performing samulnori for the Georgia State community.
Samulnori is a traditional Korean folk music and song that also incorporates drumming and dancing to create one unforgettable performance.
“Korea is known for their dance and drumming,” said Jung Ha Kim, a Sociology professor at Georgia State and a member of the two organizations who will be performing. “We’re using Korean drums as a medium to build communities.”
Kim used her connections at CPACS and the Southeast Korean Dance Association with Georgia State and what originally started out as a short performance idea developed into an hour long activity.
The event will include several performances pieces by the CPACS drum team, AWESOME (Alliance World Effort: Songs of Movement and Empowerment), including a Korean sword dance and different instrumental performances with gongs and drums.
“Members of AWESOME are multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-generational community members who come together to drum to enhance people’s movements and community empowerment,” said Kim.
The intricate dances have uses like to inaugurate a new emperor or to cast out evil spirits.
