First-round draft pick R. J. Hunter made a Summer League Debut of his own for 20 minutes, against the Utah Jazz in front of 10, 215 spectators. Georgia State basketball head coach Ron Hunter was there to support his son R.J. Hunter.
The 6 foot 6 inch guard entered the game with 5:21 remaining in the first quarter. R.J. was on high notice after his huge shot against the No. 3 Baylor Bears in the NCAA tournament, but Hunter finished 0-of-3 from three and 0-5 from the field in his debut.
It was a challenging night for Hunter adjusting to the NBA speed and competition playing against players who are desperate to make an NBA roster.
Hunter was able to get three steals, two rebounds and an assist.
Georgia State President Mark Becker and the fanbase #PantherNation are proud and excited Hunter is one of three former Panthers participating in this year’s Summer League. Manny Atkins and Eric Buckner are also involved in the Summer League.
“I’m very excited for R.J. He’s not only a great basketball player but a great person, so his success we hope is the success of all Georgia State students,” Becker said.
Former Panther forward Eric Buckner also made his Summer League debut with the Boston Celtics this season.
Manny Atkins played in the NBA Development League since leaving Georgia State in 2013 and is currently on the Detroit Pistons Summer League team.
Boston fell to Utah 100-82.
