Students were lined up in Student Center East with the crowd doubling in size and volume. People were bumping shoulders as the Panthers got ready for Spotlight’s Block Party.
Lights hung from the ceiling of a transformed Student Center East. At least 100 students were crowded in the lobby 20 minutes before the party was set to start. Staff lugged coolers as the buzz of the crowd grew louder, egged on by the smell of barbecue wafting through the air. As time ticked closer to 7 p.m., the noise boomed, and staff struggled to be heard, even with megaphones.
The murmurs of the crowd exploded into cheers and clapping as the Homecoming Court stepped off the elevator, leading the way into the Spotlight Programs Board’s Homecoming Block Party. Past the registration tables, booths of every kind lined the hall leading to the State Ballroom.
Students who attended the party could grab a free Monster Energy Drink and then make sand art or pick up a few temporary tattoos. There was also a photo booth for those who wanted to record the evening, and a man offering hand-drawn portraits for fans of the old-school selfie.
Inside the Ballroom, there were more activities for students, including a tie-dye station which always had a line. The King of Pops stand also garnered a lot of students’ attention by giving out free frozen pops with flavors like Thai Iced Tea and Lemon Cheesecake.
Despite shifting the party indoors, Hena Arora, Spotlight Programs’ Live Entertainment Director, still believed the party was “as great as [they] wanted it to be.”
Another event staff member, Bolbi, agreed that the party was successful and a great diversity opportunity for Georgia State.
The Block Party was just one of many events the Spotlight Board has lined up. Upcoming events include a tailgate at the Georgia Dome on Oct. 3, and a comedy show at the Student Center Ballroom on Oct. 4. A full schedule of events for October can be found at http://spotlight.dev.gsu.edu/calendar/.
