In dramatic conditions, Georgia State women’s soccer earned its first win of the season when they posted a hard fought 1-0 win after a two-hour delay for lightning.
“It is huge to get our first win of the season tonight,” said Head Coach Derek Leader. “It was a tough game in tough conditions but we have been in a few scrappy matches lately, including three overtime contests. To be in the middle of tonight’s match with the result on the line and to come out with a win was a huge step for us.”
The first half of the game saw both the Panthers and the North Florida Ospreys create chances, with both goalkeepers making key saves. Largely though, it was a closely fought half with both teams never looking to threaten the goal.
The game sprung into life in the 50th minute, when Georgia State forward Whitney Ravan found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Lauren Harriman broke past her defender and whipped a cross into the box that Ravan slotted into the bottom corner.
The rest of the second half saw both teams create chances, with North Florida just shooting wide in what would have been an equalizer in the 84th minute.
The game ended at 1-0, with Georgia State goalkeeper Brie Haynes picking up her second shutout of the season.
The Panthers play next at Davidson on Sept. 14.
