The Georgia State Panthers (10-10, 6-2 Sun Belt) extended its win streak to five after defeating the University of South Alabama (6-12, 4-4 Sun Belt) on Thursday.
The Panthers didn’t start with a fast start like they did against Louisiana-Monroe in Monroe, La. last Saturday, where they started with a 22-12 run with 12 minutes left in the first period.
This game started with a 8-2 run by the Jaguars with 15:30 remaining in the first period.
However, South Alabama missed 10 shots after making three of their first six.
Meanwhile, Georgia State tied the game at 8-8 and eventually took control of the game, going on a 14-2 run. The Panthers lead 31-16 at the half.
South Alabama leads the conference in three point field goal percentage, shooting 37.2 percent.
However, Georgia State defended the three point line well which caused the Jaguars to shoot 1-of-13 from the three point line by halftime.
South Alabama managed to trim the Panthers’ lead to 58-53 after five three pointers with 1:43 left in the game.
However, their effort was too little, too late as Georgia State won, 63-55, to avenge their 57-65 loss to the Jaguars on Jan. 4 in Mobile, Al.
Redshirt-junior guard Alisha Andrews led the Panthers in points with 18.
The win streak is the team’s longest win streak since the 2009-10 season where they had a six game win streak.
“The kids are fighting hard now and believe in themselves,” head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said (via Georgia State Athletics). “We play them one game at a time and five straight is really nice, but we just worry about being ready for the next game on Saturday. Obviously, the goal is to finish at the top of the league and get the number one seed in the March tournament.”
Georgia State (10-10 overall, 6-2 conference) hosts UT Arlington (1-18 overall, 0-8 conference) on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena.
