Georgia State men’s soccer won their third consecutive game, picking up their first road win against the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Spartans. Led by a great performance from sophomore Amiri Abraham, the Panthers defeated the UNCG Spartans 2-1.
The Panthers survived an early onslaught from the Spartans, with goalkeeper C.J. Cochran forced into a 6th minute save. Georgia State worked their way back into the game, and the half ended at 0-0 with UNCG having a slight shot (4-3) and corner (2-1) advantage.
The Panthers made the breakthrough in the 54th minute, when Abraham whipped a cross into the far post where Georgia State midfielder Ali Elkhalil was there to take the tap-in.
The Spartans equalized in the 61st minute, after a scramble in the box from a free kick that wasn’t cleared saw a UNCG player direct the ball into the back of the net.
Abraham grabbed his second assist of the night in the 72nd minute. Abraham crossed the ball into midfielder Rashid Alarape, who made the turn before firing into the top right corner.
“This was Amiri’s best match of the year by far,” said Head Coach Brett Surrency. “He has stayed positive and has continued to work hard and tonight it payed off.”
The game ended at 2-1, with Elkhalil and Alarape picking up their first goals of the season. The Panthers next game is Sept. 26 at Lipscomb.
