The Georgia State Men’s Soccer team lost their Sun Belt Conference opener against New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) after a late goal in overtime sealed the win for the Highlanders.
NJIT began the first half with three chances in the first twenty minutes. Panthers goalkeeper CJ Cochran made two early saves, and a shot deflected off the post.
Andy Anglade had a chance for the Panthers in the 26th minute, but the goalkeeper made the save.
Cochran made two more saves before the deadlock was broken in the 42nd minute.
Panthers midfielder Stephen McGill scored a goal from forty yards out. He chipped the goalkeeper who was off his line to make the score 1-0.
Despite leading 1-0, the Panthers were outshot 6-2 in the first half. The Panthers began strongly at the start of the second half, with Aaron Jones and Cory Plasker testing the NJIT goalkeeper.
The Highlanders tied the game in the 65th minute when a ball from Marko Drljic found another NJIT forward who swept home from six yards out.
Cochran was called on to make four saves, and the game ended regulation time at 1-1, with extra time being played.
In the 93rd minute the Highlanders found the winning goal, with a strike into the top-right corner. Over the course of the game the Panthers were outshot 12-5, with Cochran finishing with eight saves.
The Men’s Soccer team will play Oct. 14 against UNC Chapel Hill.
