Across the world, one billion men, women, and children joined together on Valentine’s Day to put an end to violence and abuse against women.
One Billion Rising is a global strike, in flash mob form, protesting rape and the r ape culture that has become so widespread; according to a 2003 UNIFEM report, one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.
Atlanta’s uprising took place in Woodruff Park. At noon, hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds broke into dance to a song entitled, ‘Break the Chain.’
The choreographed dance was simple enough to learn, and in perfect uniform, the crowd made clear what they wanted and when they wanted it.
“We cannot sit back and be silent,” said one speaker, “We will be a non-violent world. Let’s do it!”
