Georgia State announced plans to build a new eleven-story student housing and dining hall by Fall 2016, according to Georgia State news.
The new building will house 1,100 students and will be equipped with its own dining hall, according to the article.
There is a significant need for student housing on Georgia State’s campus and a waiting list of several hundred students who request student housing, according to Andrea Jones, Associate Vice President for Public Relations and Marketing Communications.
“Georgia State is really smart about the way we build housing. We build housing when we see the need,” she said.
Senior psychology Major Haley Love said on one hand she’s wary of the largeness of the building and fears that its quality might be lessened by its size. She said on the other hand it will definitely increase freshmen involvement in campus activities.
“I’m all for living on campus. . .it definitely helped me become more involved on campus and build relationships with people. You can build relationships [off campus] as a community, it’s just harder because you don’t stay on campus.”
Junior film major Chris McKnight said although he is glad to see there will be a large volume of students who can live on campus, he’s concerned that the new housing complex will only house freshmen.
“It does beg the question: What if the number of spaces that we have for incoming freshmen outweigh the number of spaces that we need for on-campus upperclassmen?” he said.
The building is the first project under a public-private partnership (P3) initiative funded through the Board of Regents and Georgia State University, with the private partner being Corvias Campus Living, according to Jones.
