Men’s soccer grabs dominant first win

Georgia State snapped its three game losing streak with a 4-1 win against the North Florida Ospreys. Three second half goals from the Panthers saw them past North Florida to record their first win of the season.

Georgia State started the game brightly and it paid off with a goal in the 10th minute. North Florida defender Diogo Quirino had a miscommunication with his goalkeeper and his back pass rolled into the net for an own goal.

The Ospreys came back into the game in the 32nd minute, with a low cross into the box finding a North Florida player who slotted the ball home to bring the score to 1-1.

In the second half the Panthers roared to life, with freshman Jad Elkhalil scoring his first career goal for Georgia State in the 71st minute. Panther midfielder Stephen Mcgill found Elkhalil who beat the last defender and finished past the goalkeeper.

“Jad did tonight what good strikers do, they only need one chance. We expect Jad to be a very good player for us, not just this season but in the years to come.” said Head Coach Brett Surrency.

The next two goals for the Panthers came from a free kick from Aaron Jones in the 74th minute, and from a dribbling Amiri Abraham run in the 76th minute.

The Panthers finished with an emphatic 4-1 victory. They return to action Tuesday, Sept. 16 against Presbyterian at Panthersville.
