Ken Lewis, former CEO of Bank of America and Georgia State alumnus, donated $5 million to Georgia State’s Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions, according to a university release.
Margaret C. Wilmoth, dean of Georgia State’s Lewis School of Nursing, said the donation will help to support faculty and student’s dreams.
“We’re very honored and excited that Mr. Lewis and his family continue to support the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions,” she said.
Lewis’ donation is the largest donation to date, according to the release.
The school was named after his mother in 2003, when Lewis made a large donation to fund its programs, the release states. Byrdine F. Lewis was a bedside nurse for over 40 years.
Lewis said he knew how hard nurses work and how important they are to their communities according to the release.
“Like a lot of students, I was balancing class work with jobs all through college, but Georgia State helped me get what I needed to succeed. One of the reasons I’ve continued to support Georgia State over the years is because that’s still a huge part of their mission. They provide the kind of opportunities to working and low-income students that can change those students’ lives,” Lewis said in the release.
