On March 10th, Georgia’s State’s Green Team announced that they will be hosting a three week competition called Panther Power Down. Resident halls will compete to see which can save the most energy.
The goal of Panther Power Down is to encourage and empower students to change energy consumption patterns and reduce energy consumption by ten percent within each residence hall , according to the Green Team.
Each hall’s reduction will be calculated against usage during the first week of the competition. Daily results of the competition will be tracked online.
Throughout the competition, the Green Team will be helping students find ways to conserve energy, as well as increase awareness of energy challenges faced. Some programs include establishing habits so that students no longer use unnecessary energy.
Marketing major Brenda Pavia said that she feels that having a go green program needs to be consistent and not a one time program.
“I feel it is unnecessary because a lot of our schedules clash and honestly no one would actively participate in that. It is so sudden and it is not promoted enough. Just because you are doing it now, doesn’t mean that they are going to do it later,” she said.
Computer science major Rick Barnwell said that he is congratulating the attempt Georgia State is taking to make the campus an eco-friendly environment.
“I think that it is a good idea that GSU is taking the initiative to go green,” he said.
The competition will begin March 26th and end April 16th.The winner will be announced April 22.
