Georgia State Senate adopted a new policy this week that permits students to receive class credit for taking massively open online courses (MOOCs).
“The landscape in higher education is changing and Georgia State University is at the forefront,” said President Mark Becker in a press release. “We want to leverage every educational tool available to help our students achieve success.”
A MOOC, a course that is entirely online, is open to anyone with no admissions requirement.
The policy is effective immediately.
The University Senate is encouraging colleges and departments within Georgia State to develop means of granting credit for MOOCs that students have taken at other institutions.
Georgia State is among the first universities to grant credit for MOOCs. Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the early adopters of MOOCs as well.
