After repeatably stating that Georgia State University is not in talks anyone for Turner Field, the University was vague in a statement Friday following an article from the Atlanta Journal Constitution that said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has communicated with Georgia State for the property.
Reed is quoted as saying the University “has some interest” in the property, and he has been communicating with University officials.
Reed said the land could be sold immediately, and there has been two to four offers for the 77 acres of land.
The Mayor’s spokesperson Carlos Campos told The Signal Friday Reed did not indicate that Georgia State was one of the offers.
“Mayor Reed only mentioned that Georgia State has shown interest in the property,” Campos said.
“The university has nothing further to add,” Georgia State spokesperson Andrea Jones told The Signal Friday.
The Signal contacted Georgia State University for the second time this month on the latest development, and Jones’ latest statement differed from last weeks’ statement in which she said they are “not in talks with anyone” in regards to Turner Field.
Georgia State President Dr. Becker expressed interest in Turner Field to 11 Alive News last week, but Jones said that the local news station “manufactured” the story and said Becker was just expressing interest as he would with any land that becomes available in Atlanta.
“You could do a variety of things,” Becker said to 11 Alive on Turner Field. “You could see housing developing. Grant Park is not that far away. You might see some retail potentially in that area.”
There is no official word on when an announcement for the property’s future plans will be made.
The Atlanta Braves are leaving Turner Field in 2017 for a new stadium they are building in Cobb County.
