Gas pipe rupture yesterday blocks traffic at corner of Edgewood and Peachtree Center

Yesterday, cars and pedestrians were blocked on the corner of Edgewood Avenue and Peachtree Center Avenue on Jan. 22 when a streetcar construction worker accidentally hit a gas pipe causing a small leak.

A heavy equipment operator working on streetcar construction when the incident occurred reported that the URS, an engineering and construction agency in charge of the Atlanta streetcar construction, were concerned about the safety of pedestrians.

“If someone gets a whiff of that gas and gets knocked out, they’re going to have a lawsuit on their hands,” he said.

Workers guided pedestrians away from the gas leak and told them to take alternate routes. Cars were redirected from the blocked roads from 3:00 pm until nightfall.

An employee for URS explained that the Atlanta Gas Light Company were delaying the repair process. What should have taken 30 minutes ended up taking the whole day, holding up traffic during rush hour.
