The Georgia State women’s soccer team kicked off against the Kennesaw State Owls and snatched a 1-1 draw after a spirited performance.
The Panthers started on the front foot, controlling possession and creating a slew of chances. The Owls worked their way back into the game with some sharp counterattacking play, but goalkeeper Christa Fox made great saves to keep Georgia State in the game.
Right before halftime, Georgia State defender Jenna Moore sent a ball over the Owls defense which found forward Ashley Nagy. She held her run to stay onside and took a shot that left the net bulging.
Midway through the second half, pressure from Kennesaw State paid off. Fox made a diving save but palmed the ball into the path of an on rushing Owls player for an easy tap-in.
The Panthers recovered well defensively after the goal, with defender Lindsay Leonardo leading from the back with a man of the match performance. Georgia State had an agonizing chance to take the lead late on when Nagy made a darting run past the defense to go one on one with the Owls’ keeper, but had her shot blocked.
Head coach Derek Leader said, “It was a hard fought match between two rivals but I think we have more soccer in us then we showed tonight.”
The women’s soccer team is back in action at Murray State on Aug. 29th, and return to Panthersville where they’ll face Stamford.
