On Saturday, the Georgia State Men’s Soccer team played Appalachian State to a dramatic finish, with Andy Anglade scoring a late winner in overtime to seal the win for Georgia State’s first Sun Belt win of the season.
The Panthers opened the first half strong, but the Mountaineers were up for the challenge. Georgia State midfielder Eddie Wilding had two shots early in the first half, and goalkeeper C.J. Cochran came up with a save in the 45th minute to keep the game goalless.
The second half saw Appalachian State push hard for a goal, having three shots in the first 15 minutes. The Panthers responded with two shots of their own, but both were saved. The game ended regulation time at 0-0 and went into overtime.
After seeing off early pressure from the Mountaineers in first period of overtime, the Panthers struck. Panthers midfielder Ali Elkhalil played a ball over the top of the Appalachian State defense, and Anglade accelerated into the space behind the defense, latched on the ball and slotted home for the win.
“Most of our guys are new to conference play because we have not had any conference results that have counted since 2011,” Head Coach Brett Surrency said. “Wins like this are huge moving forward as the team learns what is necessary to be successful in a conference.”
Georgia State will host Jacksonville tonight at Panthersville. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
