Students that usually trek the sidewalks along Decatur Street and Courtland Street will have to use a detour this weekend due to the $1,350,000 Library South/Classroom South Chiller and Cooling Tower Replacement Project.
The streets will close in order to raise a large crane in front of the Sports Arena on Decatur Street and replace cooling towers, associated piping and support frame.
“The existing chillers and cooling towers, which provide cooling to Library South and Classroom South, have outlasted their useable life and are too costly and inefficient to keep in service,” said Keith Martin of Georgia State Facilities Design and Construction Services. “The new chillers and cooling towers are more efficient and will require less maintenance to operate.”
Courtland Street will also be closed periodically during the crane lifts.
The streets will close on Friday at 7 p.m. and reopen on Monday at 5 a.m. Occupants of the parking areas in Collins Street, H Lot, B Lot, C Lot, U Lot and X Lot must be vacated by 6 p.m. on Friday. The G-Deck parking area will be open for parking and accessible from Central Avenue.
Pedestrian access to the Sports Arena and Library South will be accessible by the pedestrian bridge across Decatur Street, the indoor library link bridge or the pedestrian bridge in G-Deck.
Access for faculty and staff to enter M-Deck and the SK & N parking complex will be permitted during the street closings throughout the weekend.
