A single-engine plane smashed into I-285 near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard Friday morning shutting down the interstate, according to WSB-TV Atlanta.
The plane left the tarmac of Peachtree Dekalb Airport around 10 a.m. en route to Oxford, Mississippi. The pilot reported mechanical issues following takeoff, according to WSB-TV.
All aboard the plane were killed in the crash but no motorists were injured. The deceased include three males, one female, and one pet, according to WSB-TV.
Police have cordoned off the northern part of the interstate while the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board conduct an investigation.
Commuters traveling through the north side of the perimeter are urged to alter their routes to avoid I-285. Inner loop traffic is being ushered towards Ashford Dunwoody Road and outer loop traffic is pushed to I-85.
Georgia State English major Patrick Friend said his trek towards the Shaky Knees music festival was afflicted by the traffic backup.
“Through all the sweat dripping off my face, all I see is lines and lines of cars,” he said. “…Still, I can only hope for the best for anyone personally involved.”
