City Hall is considering renewing their lease for Underground Atlanta or allow someone else to buy the property, according to Creative Loafing.
“I think that that would be the biggest mistake the city could make because Underground Atlanta has a whole history behind it” said political science major Dominique Glover. “It’s not just a place for stores, it’s what was there in the reconstruction of the modernized Atlanta. Don’t tear it down or keep it the way it is, but do some renovations.”
Creative Loafing reported that although decisions have not been made, in the past there have been ideas foated around for turning the area into an arts district or casino.
Fulton County property records show Underground Atlanta is worth $21.3 million including the site and two parking decks, according to Creative Loafing.
Psychology major Marisia Barker said that Atlanta should renew the lease so that prices will not rise in the area.
“Something big and splashy could be put there and may have to raise up rent, and it could raise up property taxes,” Marisia said.
Underground Atlanta is a historical site and was the central area for railroads in the South in the 1920s that connected Atlanta to Tennessee, according to Underground Atlanta’s website. Currently, it features retail shops and restaurants.
