The Panthers opened up their men’s basketball season with a solid win over the Georgia College Bobcats. This was the fifth match between the teams, with the Panthers now leading the series 5-0.
Early in the beginning of the game the Panthers had a slightly slow start. Head Coach Ron Hunter, was furious with R.J. Hunter’s defensive start as he allowed two consecutive back-to-back three pointers.
Senior point guard Ryan Harrow came out with an aggressive attack mindset. Harrow’s defensive hands were active with having a pair pass disruptions transitioning into several fast break points for himself. Harrow finished the first half with 17 points and three assists.
Harrow stated in the postgame press conference that he was looking to attack the 2-3 zone. Harrow spoke about wanted to look for contact inside the paint to get to the free throw line.
Hunter seemed to struggle in the first half of the game only scoring four points and going 0-3 behind the arc. He managed to fight for rebounds grabbing three boards, while dishing out 3 assists. Hunter finished the game with 17 points, despite going 0-8 behind the arc.
Senior Ryan Green had an efficient 12 points, three boards and three assist in the game coming off.
“[Green] plays so hard on the court that he literally wears himself out. He gave us the energy and effort we needed to win tonight,” Coach Hunter said.
The former Louisville transfer, Kevin Ware made his debut with a great defensive presence and distributing the ball. Ware finished the game with a team high seven assist and six rebounds.
Georgia College’s Evyn Smith led the Bobcats in scoring with 12 points.
Georgia State will host Shorter College at the Sports Arena on Nov. 14 for their second exhibition game.
