Abigail Tere-Apisah came from one set down to defeat No. 5 Beatrice Capra 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 Saturday in the NCAA singles quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals in Athens, Georgia.
After what appeared to be an even first two sets, Tere-Apisah cruised in the third set. Capra won her serve in the first game of the set, but Tere-Apisah subsequently won six-consecutive games to grab the third set and her spot in Sunday’s semifinals.
Tere-Apisah dropped the first set 6-4, but came back in the second set with an early break to get up 3-1 and eventually take the second set 6-3.
Tere-Apisah made history yesterday by becoming the first Georgia State tennis player to make it to the NCAA quarterfinals. She earned All-American status by advancing to the quarterfinals and being among the top eight players in the NCAA.
The historic run for Tere-Apisah and doubles partner Masa Grgan came to an end Friday when the pair lost its Round of 16 match to Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe from Alabama 6-3, 6-3. It was the farthest a doubles pair from Georgia State had ever gone.
Tere-Apisah’s Final Four match will be played noon Sunday against Lynn Chi from California University.
