1. Tennis violations
Men’s Tennis Head Coach Joerg Barthel and Assistant Coach Cesar Vargas were dismissed after both were accused of numerous NCAA and Georgia State Athletics violations. An internal investigation revealed gambling on collegiate and professional sports, misuse of University money and alcohol use as only a few of the many allegations. 2. Harrows’ missed shot in Sun Belt final
The men’s basketball run in the Sun Belt came to an abrupt end as Ryan Harrow missed a last-second layup to fall to Louisana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt final. Harrow stole the show scoring a career-high 37 points and carried the team to a 11-point lead with five minutes to play. However, Louisana-Lafayette rallied in the final minute of regulation to force overtime before pulling out an 82-81 victory over the top-seeded Panthers. Harrow’s last-second shot to win the game as well as the Panthers’ March Madness chances fell short.
3. Football goes winless
The football team went 0-12 in Miles’ first season.
The 2013 football season is one the Panthers would love to forget. After winning only one game in 2012, the Panthers finished 2013 0-12. The defense could not make an impact on the game, as they allowed 36.7 points per game, and the offense struggled to put points on the board, averaging 18.8. The dismal season led to low attendance at games and was evident at the Jacksonville State game, where less than 300 students in the student body section were in attendance.
4. Women’s basketball team blown-out in Sun Belt tournament
The Panthers’ season came to an embarrasing end at the conference tournament as they were obliterated by Texas State 78-44 in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament. The Panthers were sitting in second in the conference with a 6-2 conference record midway through the season, but then injuries took its toll on the team. Four players missed a total of 36 games including two starters: Ashley Watson and Haley Gerrin. The Panthers finished with a 12-19 overall record and 8-10 in the Sun Belt.
5. Streak snapped
Georgia State’s longest winning streak in the program came to an end against Troy.
The men’s basketball longest streak in the program’s history came to a screetching hault Feb. 15 against Troy on ESPN2. The Panthers were on a 14-game winning streak at the time, but had not played in eight days due to winter storm Pax that shut down Atlanta for a week. Troy was 4-8 in conference play at the time.The loss began the Panthers woes on ESPN as they went 0-2 on games broadcasted on ESPN.
