When it was announced that retired Associate Justice John Paul Stevens of the Supreme Court of the United States would deliver the 53rd Henry J. Miller Distinguished Lecture on Georgia State’s campus, students and faculty of the College of Law expressed excitement for the opportunity.
“We are honored to have Justice Stevens giving the annual Miller Lecture,” said Steven J. Kaminshine, dean of the College of Law. “He has shaped history throughout his career. We look forward to hearing about his experiences serving on the nation’s highest court.”
Wendy Cromwell, Director of Communication Department said it’s wonderful for law students to hear from Justice Stevens about what its like to work in courts. She said it is a high profile visit for Georgia State.
“We have got interest from other law schools in town, trying to get their students to come to our lecture. So its a big deal,” she said.
Law student Ali Awad said Miller’s lecture is a great opportunity for the students to come and listen to a well seasoned attorney or judge.
“It is a big event for the students and faculty,” Awad said.
Jeff Anderson, law student, said that he and his friends are excited about the event.
“It’s one of the few opportunities you get to meet and listen to somebody who is as renowned as a Supreme Court Justice,” Anderson said.
Benjamin Lynde, law student, said it’s exciting that Georgia State has this opportunity for its students to have someone like Justice Stevens deliver a lecture.
“It will be interesting to see how he came to change his viewpoints over the course of time about the differences between conservative and liberal views,” Lynde said.
