Business tycoon J. Mack Robinson died on Friday, Feb. 7 after 50 years of business in the fashion, media, insurance, and banking industries.
Robinson attended the Georgia Evening College, which later became Georgia State University, in 1941. He gave the business school a $10 million dollar grant in 1998. It was then named the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, currently educating more than 8,000 students.
Robinson rarely came into the public eye, but his connections and influence on the business community was undeniable, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC).
“Mack Robinson is a classic American success story,” Ed Sims, an Atlanta lawyer who once chaired the state Democratic Party, said in a 2008 interview, according to the AJC. “His business success, and everything he’s been involved with, is legendary. He is also one of the nicest human beings I have ever met.”
In addition to business, Robinson also served in the United States military after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He said this took him away from his studies in an interview with the AJC in 1998.
Along with Georgia State, the Westminster Schools also named a building after Robinson who gave millions in donations to schools.
Funeral arrangements will be made by H.M Patterson & Son, Spring Hill Chapel.
