Men’s Basketball
The post-Harrow/Hunter era for Georgia State appeared to still be a work in progress during the 77-58 win over Emmanuel College. Isaiah Williams, Kevin Ware, Jeremy Hollowell, Jordan Session and Markus Crider were the starters, with Isaiah Dennis and Jeff Thomas coming off the bench after starting in the season opener.
“The lineup we saw tonight will be completely different next week,” Head Coach Ron Hunter said after the win. “I’m not set on the lineup. I’ve been spoiled, I’ve only had two point guards. Now, I’ve got a new point guard.”
Redshirt junior Hollowell led all Panther scorers with 25 points in 36 minutes, which is another adjustment for Indiana University transfer who averaged 13.8 minutes in two seasons as a Hoosier.
“I’m trying to get used to playing these minutes,” Hollowell said.
Ware followed his leading scoring performance in the season opener with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Although Coach Hunter isn’t set on a complete starting lineup, he said both Ware and Hollowell will be included regardless of the combination.
Redshirt freshman Thomas went scoreless in 14 minutes of action.
According to sports information director Mike Holmes, the Men will visit Phillips Arena on Nov. 24 to catch the first half of RJ Hunter’s professional debut in Atlanta, before heading off to face Ole Miss in Mississippi on Nov. 25.
Women’s Basketball
Georgia State gave Tennessee Tech its first win of the season on a night where the Panthers shot 31.9 percent from the floor.
“We missed a ton of easy shots, so we can give Tech credit, but know we really hurt ourselves. They did fight like crazy tonight to get back in the game by forcing turnovers, hitting the offensive glass and getting to the free throw line 25 times. You can’t dig big holes like that and expect to win and you can’t shoot that poorly and expect to win,” Head Coach Sherwin Baldwin-Tener said, according to Georgia State communications.
Freshman Astaja Tyghter led the team in scoring, with 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals on the night. Sophomore star guard Makeba Ponder shot 3-for-13 from the field on the night and finished with seven points. Junior Alaysia Mitchell came off the bench and contributed eight points and five rebounds in 14 minutes of action.
Georgia State trailed by as much as 18 in the third quarter before cutting the deficit as small as four with 5:46 left in the fourth.
The Women will face Morehead State in the home-opener on Nov. 21 at the GSU Sports Arena.
