University eliminates 110 jobs

After Georgia State eliminated jobs to save money, 25 administrative workers are out of a job according to Andrea Jones of University Relations.

“There were 110 positions that were affected, 25 of those were filled. The overall reduction if force saves the university approximately $4 million,” Jones stated to The Signal in an email last Wednesday.

She said they were administrative positions previously held in multiple colleges and departments.

“There were no faculty positions affected. Most of the cuts were administrative support positions and do not directly affect students,” Jones said.

This is the first major reduction of this kind for Georgia State since 2008.

It comes after Gov. Nathan Deal has ordered 3 percent budget cuts to all state agencies.

“With the overwhelming majority of our budget tied to people, it is impossible to absorb a large, permanent budget cut without having it affect people,” said Georgia State President Mark Becker in a memo this week. “I deeply regret that this reduction in staff is necessary.”
