With a team of fourteen dedicated event planners from Georgia State’s Black Student Alliance (BSA) and the Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA) and their combined forces and expertise of future moguls, who have now created Atlanta’s premiere spring music festival.
The Leak, which occurs on April 9, 2010, is exactly what it sounds like: a festival to leak underground artists to the Atlanta college community. This is The Leak’s second year and there are no signs this festival is slacking in quality.
The Leak will be held in Hurt Park, first to utilize the green space surrounding Georgia State, as well as to accommodate the large amount of expected attendees coming from all areas of Atlanta, including Georgia State, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Emory University.
Stimulating all of the senses is essential to a successful event. Creative Director and owner of H.I. Ink Art Society Zamir Green has taken special care to ensure that the event is a success.
“I’m trying to create something tangible. I want there to be eating, seeing, touching. I might even burn incense,” he joked.
Director of Corporate Affairs and current MEISA President Chevon Hines, has been working diligently to finance the teams creative endeavors. Sponsors include the likes of BMI, Patchwork Studios, Hot 107.9 and Magic 102.5. These sponsors are crucial to The Leak’s success, which is based on the extensive line-up of top-notch events scheduled for The Leak Week. Leak Week is intended to bolster excitement and participation in the festival as well as connect students with important figures in the entertainment industry.
Leak Week kicks off on April 2 at Blue Frog Cantina for The Leak Mixtape Release Party featuring music from artists in The Leak Festival. Then there’s the Freestyle Battle sponsored by 107.9 and Patchwork Studios on April 6 at 12:15 in Library Plaza.
On April 8, the incredible team created a networking event, specifically designed to connect college students whose passions lie in professions such as graphic design, writing and art, with figureheads in Atlanta at the fabulous Museum of Design Atlanta or MODA. The next day is the big event and it is absolutely free!
At the Leak festival you can expect to hear a variety of sounds including acoustics, live bands, neo-soul artists, pop, rock and hip-hop. This event will be captured by Digital College Network, the company responsible for streaming the videos students see in the University Bookstore, and with a viewer base of over 34 million, very few college students will want to miss out on this event.
Director of Operations for The Leak music festival and former Student Government Association President Evan Eskridge says the event is the product of hard work,
“There is a dream, a vision,” he said, “and we’re going to bring it into fruition.”
Striving to create the premiere spring festival in Atlanta is no small feat, but one that, “the Space Jam team or MonSTARS,” as Zamir Green refers to the team, can certainly accomplish. With your support, Atlanta may finally see an outdoor festival that may one day rival those of surrounding cities.
