Institute for Biomedical Science (IBMS) established at Georgia State

On March 3, 2014 Georgia State announced that the new Institute for Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) has opened with a mission to advance human health research.

According to an interview conducted by Georgia State research writer LaTina Emerson, founding director Jian-Dong Li said that the university launched the program to give biomedical science students a full advantage.

The IBMS website says that it will offer both graduate and undergraduate programs leading to Ph.D., B.S. and M.S.degrees in biomedical sciences.

Biology major Pallavi Rallapalli gave her opinion on the new institute.

I
think it would be a good idea. I
t’s
another way to get undergraduates and
it allows more students to get more of an experience
to see if they want to go into medicine or not,” she said.

Entrepreneur
major Samuel Floyd shared his opinion as well.

I
think it’s a great opportunity for people who want to study something
that
wasn’t previously offered. It brings m
ore opportunity to learn and branch out. I feel
like we will have better
research with more diverse people coming
here to learn.”

The website says that the institute will be researching to understand a variety of human diseases that will ultimately lead to better patient care.

“The Institute for Biomedical Sciences plans to be involved with units to the university, other Georgia and non-Georgia research institutions, major medical centers, private sector companies and more, ” Li said.
