Georgia State director appointed to National Advisory Council

Dr. Jian- Dong Li, Director of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, is now a member of the National Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Advisory Council, according to Georgia State release.

The appointment lasts four years and 12 members are selected among leading representatives in the health and scientific discipline, according to the release. Six individuals from the public are also appointed.

Li will advise the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Director of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) on research and training, according to the release.

He will also counsel other programs regarding hearing and communication disorders, according to the release.

Li earned his M.D. degree from Tsingtao University School of Medicine in China and his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the University of California, San Francisco, according to the release.

He joined Georgia State in 2011 as the founding director of the Center for Inflammation, Immunity and Infection, according to Georgia State’s website.

Li’s research focuses on how inflammation is controlled in various diseases and is currently creating anti- inflammatory therapeutic agents for aiding inflammatory diseases, according to Georgia State news.

He said this was a great honor and provides him with an opportunity to contribute to advise the Secretary HHS, Director of NIH and the Director of NIDCD.

“I look forward to working together with the chair and the council members in the next four years towards achieving the mission of NIDCD,” Li said.
