Fiesta in Siesta

The Georgia State sand volleyball team secured several victories this past weekend as they participated in the largest tournament of their season.

The Fiesta at Siesta Tournament took place Friday through Sunday at Siesta Key, Fla..

Friday consisted of a team match against Florida Atlantic.

They defeated the Owls 4-1.

The No. 1 through 4 teams all defeated the Owls in straight sets.

Saturday began the bracket pool play.

There was a gold and silver bracket for the No.1 and 2 pairs of each team. Before the bracket rounds, pool matches were played to determine placement in either the gold or silver bracket.

No. 1 pair Lane Carico and Katie Madewell went 3-0 on Saturday putting them in the gold bracket to be played Sunday.

The No. 2 pair of Sara Olivova and Jansen Button went 0-3 putting them in the silver bracket.

The No. 3 team Milani Pickering and Katelyn Rawls went 3-0 Saturday as they participated in the “Team Fiesta Cup.”

Carico and Madewell won two matches againt the College of Charleston in gold bracket play to put them in the semifinals.

They then lost in the semis to Louisiana-Monroe’s Tanya Sukach and Zuzana Markova, 22-20, 8-21, 18-16.

The Panthers’ No. 1 pair went 6-1 over the weekend, extending their record to 21-5.

In the silver bracket, Sara Olivova and Jansen Button fell to Florida International’s Emily Pedschneit and Tina Taghiyani  21-15, 22-24, 15-12, eliminating them in the first round.

The Panthers take the sand next at the Florida State University Tournament  played April 20 and 21 in Tallahassee, Fla..
