Coaching change within sand volleyball

Georgia State Athletics Director Cheryl Levick announced last Wednesday that Panthers’ former sand volleyball assistant coach Beth Van Fleet has been promoted to head coach of the Georgia State sand volleyball team.

In anticipation of sand volleyball becoming an NCAA sponsored collegiate sport in 2014, Van Fleet was promoted to head coach.

This is part of a move to help merge the volleyball and sand volleyball programs at Georgia State, a tactic the programs avoided for the inaugural season.

“I felt we weren’t getting everything done for court volleyball in the spring. It didn’t allow the flexibility we need to have for recruiting, especially in cultivating key relationships,” Tami Audia said in a statement to Georgia State Athletics.

Former head coach of the sand volleyball team, Tami Audia, has been promoted to Director of Volleyball at Georgia State. Audia will remain head coach for the indoor volleyball team at Georgia State.

“It is a pleasure to promote Tami and Beth,” Levick said according to Georgia State Athletics. “They are excellent coaches and will provide strong leadership to maximize the growth of sand and court volleyball at Georgia State.”

The sand volleyball team had a record of 8-9 in its inaugural season at Georgia State under Audia. The No. 1 Pair of Lane Carico and Katie Madewell made it to the semi-final round in the Pair’s American Volleyball Coaches Association National Championship.

Van Fleet is a Georgia State graduate and current master’s student who played indoor volleyball for the Panthers from 1995-98. Van Fleet played professional beach volleyball for eight years with the Association for Volleyball Professionals.
