Zumbathon brings hundreds to Rec Center

A wave of arms raise in unison with shaking hips as house music echoes throughout the Student Recreation Center. An excited woman amps up the crowd as she leads the dance, energetic cheers sounding in reply to her. It’s Zumba.

The annual Zumbathon was held on Wednesday in the main gym of the Student Rec Center with more than 300 students and faculty in attendance. The event was run by Coordinator of Institutional Programs, Stephanie Belcher.

“Zumba is one the most popular programs at Georgia State” Belcher said. “We wanted to give ourselves a night to showcase the program and attract people who may be interested in it”.

The typical Zumba workout rooms only fit about forty people, so the event allowed a large audience to partake in the workout and get a feel for the experience.

“We were able to get more people out here” Belcher said. “All students are able to get in free, and faculty is able to participate through salary deductions. The event was just something different. I t was great being able to get everyone in the same place”.

Belcher has been coordinating the Zumba program since last November, and said the program is still going strong.

“We have Zumba classes every week, and the Zumbathon is once a year”.

Since the classes are on a weekly basis, anyone still interested in partaking in the Zumba workout craze can participate at any time.
