Women’s Soccer done in by two back-to-back goals at Murray State

The Women’s Soccer team traveled to Murray State in Kentucky and left with a 2-1 defeat to the Racers.

The Panthers started the stronger side with them taking the lead in the fourth minute. After two previous crosses, Georgia State player Margaret Bruemmer whipped in a powerful cross that was curved by the wind, hitting the back post and nestling in the back of the net.

Murray State responded well to the goal by increasing their pressure but were unable to capitalize. The Panthers managed to stay dangerous on corners but went into half-time barely holding onto their slender goal advantage.

Georgia State came out early in the second half much as they had in the first and forced Murray State’s goalkeeper to make numerous saves to keep the game at 1-0.

The Panthers were knocked out of the game though by two back-to-back goals from the Racers in the 65th and 69th minute. In the first goal, Brie Haynes made the initial save, but the rebound fell into the path of Racers player Harriet Withers for an easy tap-in. The second goal came from Withers initial shot coming off the post and falling into her path for another easy score.

Georgia State is now 0-1-1 for the season. The team returns to the Soccer Complex for their first home game of the season this Sunday, Aug. 31.
