Turkish police shut down pride parade

Sunday morning, Turkish police began throwing teargas to prevent a pride parade from taking place in Taksim Square in Istanbul. According to Turkish police, the annual parade had been banned to prevent protests in the city’s square, however, the LGBT community gathered around a rainbow flag and began reading a statement in support of the Orlando victims, but were attacked by police. Even though the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has avoided making comments on the gay community, he was seen dining with Turkey’s biggest transgender celebrity later that evening. The president and his wife celebrated a Ramadan dinner alongside Bülent Ersoy just hours after the protests, according to The Guardian.
