Service one step at a time

Over the course of last semester, Alpha Lambda Delta has worked to make the philanthropy and community service projects the premiere of the organization.

“As college students there is always a need for service and dedication. It’s about the small steps we take to impact our environment and our society as a whole,” said Marlena Collins, President and Philanthropy Chair of Alpha Delta Lambda

Alpha Lambda Delta aims to give students a sense of belonging in their organization while serving as a foundation so students can continue to grow and learn throughout their college career.

Last fall, they participated and fundraised for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Atlantic Station, helped decorate Centennial Olympic Park for Christmas, volunteered at AG Rhodes Health and Rehab and worked to preserve Historic Oakland Cemetery.

In addition to those activities, the organization went on a field trip with Parklane Elementary, partnered with Safehouse Outreach to host a block party for kids, walked the NAMI Walk at Turner Field and made tie blankets for area homeless.

This semester Alpha Lambda Delta hopes to continue their commitment to the community, plan to get over 100 hours of community involvement and top last semester and give back even more this semester.

“My goal is to make Alpha Lambda Delta’s presence very synonymous and known with philanthropy. We also hope to induct our largest class this year of at the beginning of May,” Collins said.

The organization has already hosted events such as Syrup and Smiles and Pancake Brunch for Atlanta homeless men, as well as collected books for their book drive and written letters of advocacy to the state legislatures.

Alpha Lambda Delta has many upcoming events for March which include: planting shrubs at Centennial Olympic Park from nine to noon on March 2, volunteering to help sort books for books for Africa on March 11 from 10 a.m. to noon, and every Tuesday night they volunteer at the food bank from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Also, for the month of April they plan to participate in the Hispanic Health Walk on April 7th, partner with Golden Key International Honor Society on April 27th, and participate in Relay for Life April 26th.
